There’s no such thing as a useless dog
A dog that is useless is a dog without a job
That job can be big or that job can be small
But anything is better than no job at all!
By job I mean a role in life
Something that gives it satisfaction without the strife
By role I mean a job to do
And that I am afraid has to come from the owner - you!
Some dogs work at rounding up sheep
Properly trained those dogs really earn their keep!
Others learn to lead the blind,
Some hear for the deaf and some have the disabled to mind.
The police dogs lot is normally a happy one
Helping to keep order in riots or tracking down an escaped con.
The Army, the Navy, the RAF all have their dogs,
Whose duties may vary but they love their jobs.
The most common job of all is that of the dog who works as a pet
Being fed and watered, groomed, loved and taken to the vet.
But even those dogs need to be taught and trained,
Without basic training, even the best pet can become a pain!
So before you do the usual and blame the dog
Think about it, who trained him to do his job?
If nobody has and he has been left to run riot,
Then you can hardly blame him for disturbing the peace and quiet!
So when you decide to take on a faithful friend,
Remember that he is just the beginning of a story, you are responsible for how it ends.
