The Dogs
Merlin is the only one of my dogs who was bought as a puppy from his breeder.   I wanted a totally working bred collie who had been unspoilt by any human being.   He is adorable, responsive and such a clown!   He also has his own page, which you will locate in my page list above. :o)
Chucky (Doberman cross) was taken down to the bottom of the garden as a tiny pup by his 'breeder' along with a shotgun!   The neighbour guessed what was about to happen so took him in himself.   Unable to keep him due to having dogs of his own, he took him to a rescue shelter.   I adopted him when he was barely 6 weeks old, half bald and suffering from a cold.   He is a sensitive, sweet dog and was born around the end of November, 2000.
Candy (small Collie cross) was found by a dog warden out on the streets on a snowy Xmas eve.   We adopted her in the hope that my husband could do agility with her but alas, she showed no aptitude or interest, preferring to be a decorative dog instead!   She is very pretty but quite 'daft'!   Born around October 2001.
Doogy (collie cross basset hound) was a habitual street stray that I picked up as a dogwarden after somebody managed to contain him in their yard.   He had quite a reputation for fighting other dogs and fathering unwanted pups!   I adopted him after he went unclaimed and had him neutered straight away!   He turned into the a lovable clown of a dog proving to be very sociable with people and other dogs once his testosterone level died down!   We figure that he was born around summer, 2000 though he may be a little older.
Foxy (Jack Russell cross) had had six homes by the age of 5 months when we took her on.   She was very overweight, loved to escape and was not housetrained!   It took a few weeks to get her right but since then she has been an absolute pleasure to have around.   She did mini agility in her younger days and quickly won her way out of 'Starters' with my husband running her.   We think that she was born around December 1996.
Sadly departed...
Lace was a rescued Weimaraner, the result of a broken home where to be honest, very little had been done with her anyway.   She was taken to a rescue shelter where I was helping out.   My first impression was that 'the lights were on but no-one was at home'!   That was not her fault, with her overgrown claws, tight collar (we had to cut the chain off her neck with bolt cutters!)   and lack of muscle tone, it was obvious (from what we were told too) that this two year old dog had had no training, (being left alone all day 5 days a week) and had had little in the way of correct exercise.   She came home with me and after having her speyed, we trained her in the basics within a few weeks.   She went on to train in Working Trials and then also train and compete in agility.   She was average in those disciplines but always tried her best.   Sadly at the age of 13 she became ill with Insulinoma, a tumour within the pancreas and 8 months later was given sleep to prevent further suffering.
R.I.P Kizzy.
Kizzy (Jack Russell X Spaniel) was left behind by travellers when they moved on and lived wild for several weeks before she could be caught with a live trap.   I fostered her in my home and it became apprent that this petrified little dog simply had to stay, despite the fact that she bit, defecated and urinated in fear if you tried to pick her up!   Time and patience brought out a cheeky albeit feisty character who soon decided that we were hers forever!
At the approximate age of 13, she was sadly given sleep after a sudden illness.   We gave her every chance but it would have been cruel to put her through any more stress and discomfort.
Jasper was a working bred Border Collie who was also one of the best friends I ever had.   He was bought by myself as a flea-ridden, louse infested puppy from someone I thought was a good breeder.   After nursing his subsequent gastro-enteritis day and night for two weeks, he and I bonded and enjoyed years of doing obedience, agility and working trials as well as visiting schools to teach children how to behave properly around strange dogs, a task which Jasper took very seriously.
I was devastated when, at the age of 13 & 1/2, he had to be given merciful sleep after suffering a sudden and severe stroke.
Marstoanna Pixie Dee, Pixie to her friends, was a well bred pedigree Pembroke Corgi who had a long, fluffy coat - considered a big fault in her breed!   Who cares?   She was absolutely gorgeous because of it!   A loyal, intelligent little dog, she had a sometimes feisty side and could be stubborn but always loved her family!   My two girls grew up with her and we showed those who said corgis were no good around children just how wrong they were!   Pixie was trained in obedience and we sometimes competed in it for fun.
She was given sleep at just 11 & 1/2 years old after a short illness.
